Yes, the union shield is intended to remain on the reverse design of the cent for the foreseeable future.

What’s the latest? Will the Union Shield remain the permanent reverse of the Lincoln Penny? Have you heard anything regarding this?

Sorry, the new reverse desisn is weak, at best. The Indain Head penny of 1859-1909 had a much nicer shield and a more significant symbolic design. Maybe they should reuse that design. This design looks like it was done by a second grader, I mean, it REALLY looks like some kind of play money! I hope they wake up and replace it quickly! Lincoln deserves better than this!

I like the refreshed bust on the obverse. It’s reminiscent of older pennies, and the last revision (about 2006-2009?) had old Abe looking pretty funny.

According to the US Mint, the new 2010 Lincoln Cents “will be issued for circulation in quantities to meet the demands of commerce.” So far, the only coins seem to have only reached the channels of circulation in Puerto Rico. Perhaps slowly, but eventually, the coins will be distributed to other parts of the US.

Besides, circulation channels, there are a few other ways to get the new cents:

On Thursday, the US Mint held an official launch ceremony in Springfield, Illinois. Following the ceremony, attendees could exchange currency for the new coins at face value.

Another exchange might take place in Washington DC area at a later date.

Finally, the US Mint will sell a Two Roll Set of the 2010 Lincoln Cents in the spring. The expected price is $8.95. When released, you will be able to purchase them on the US Mint’s website.
