Following Saturday’s unveiling of this year’s Ronald and Nancy Reagan coins, the U.S. Mint has shared designs for 2016’s other First Spouse gold coins, which will feature Patricia Nixon and Betty Ford. Images of the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford Presidential $1 coins can be viewed here.
The obverse of the Patricia Nixon coin features an image of Mrs. Nixon with the inscriptions PATRICIA NIXON, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2016, 37th, and 1969-1974 included in the field and near the rim. It was designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Don Everhart.
The reverse, designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz, carries a depiction of figures holding hands around the world, referencing the First Lady’s efforts to promote volunteerism. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD are included along the rim.
The obverse of the Betty Ford coin bears an image of Mrs. Ford and the inscriptions BETTY FORD, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2016, 38th, and 1974-1977. It was designed by Barbara Fox and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso.
The reverse, designed by Chris Costello and sculpted by Renata Gordon, features an image of a young woman climbing a staircase, symbolizing Mrs. Ford’s “openness and advocacy regarding addiction, breast cancer awareness, and the rights of women.” The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD are included along the rim.
The Mint currently plans to release Proof and Uncirculated versions of the Patricia Nixon First Spouse Gold Coin on February 18; the Betty Ford issues are expected on March 25, while the Nancy Reagan coins are slated for July.
First launched in 2007, the First Spouse series will conclude in 2016. For more information on this program, please visit the U.S. Mint’s Web site.
