This numismatic sales update covers the U.S. Mint’s reporting period ending January 1, 2017. Ordinarily, we take a look at the previous week’s best-selling Mint products, but since we’ve just closed out the old year and started a new one, we’ll look at total sales for the 122 items in the Mint’s final report.
Two 2016 products sold a half-million or more units last year: the 2016 U.S. Mint Proof Set (16RG), with 575,183 sold; and the 1-ounce American Silver Eagle 30th-anniversary Proof coin (16EA), with 525,386 sold. These are followed, in the over-100,000 sales range, by the following 2016 items:
- the Silver Proof Set (16RH)—356,683
- the Uncirculated Set (16RJ)—266,301
- the Presidential $1 Proof Set (16P3)—213,216
- the 1-ounce ASE Uncirculated coin (16EG)—163,882
- the Mercury Dime Centennial gold coin (16XB)—124,910
The Uncirculated ASE made the list above despite being available for only the last month of the year, and despite nearly 9,000 returns recorded during last week’s reporting period.
Forty products on the list were subject to mintage or product limits: these included the First Spouse coins, the Centennial gold coins, the America the Beautiful 5-ounce Uncirculated coins, the commemorative coins, the American Eagle and Buffalo coins, and the American Liberty medals. Twenty-three of these are now listed as “sold out”; however, most of the 11 commemorative products never approached anything near their mintage limits, and were not true sell-outs. (The National Park Service three-coin Proof set [16CG], with 14,595 of its 15,000 product limit sold, is the exception.) That leaves 12 genuinely sold-out products, including the high points of the Mint’s catalog year: the American Eagle 1-ounce platinum Proof (16EJ); the Mercury Dime Centennial; and the American Liberty silver medals (UH9 and UH10).
Counting each Mint product as a single item (i.e., three-coin sets count as one item rather than three), the Mint sold 4,012,339 total units as of the January 1 report. Of those, more than half the sales (2,225,561) were claimed by those eight items that sold more than 100,000 each.
Looking at the Presidential $1 products separately, the Proof Set (16P3) and Uncirculated Set (16P2) were the winners, with 213,216 and 51,348 in sales, respectively. The 25-coin Presidential rolls outstripped the individual covers, by far, with the P-Mint rolls averaging about 43,000 per president and the D-Mint rolls averaging about 38,000 per president. Among the covers, Ronald Reagan came in first, with 17,860 sold; Richard Nixon was next, with 13,710 sold; and Gerald Ford was third, with 12,097 sold. The remaining Presidential products fell in line below, with the pricey First Spouse gold coins selling fewer than 2,000 each for Uncirculated and 2,200 to 3,200 for Proofs.
Looking at the America the Beautiful products separately, the two big winners were the ATB Quarters Silver Proof Set (16AQ), with 88,475 sold, and the ATB Quarters Proof Set (16AP), with 85,032 sold. These were followed by the ATB Quarters Uncirculated Set (16AA), with 29,559 sold. The next ATB product cluster was the 5-ounce Uncirculated coins, which averaged more than 18,000 apiece (not counting Ft. Moultrie, which was released at the end of the year). The three-coin sets come next, averaging around 13,000 apiece. The three-roll P-D-S sets (120 coins each) outperformed the two-roll P-D sets (80 coins each); the former sold about 9,000 units each, while the latter sold about 7,500 units each. (For those looking for a clear favorite among the year’s five sites, we’re sad to disappoint, as not much of a pattern emerges.)
The bottom of the list, unsurprisingly, is populated with the large boxes and bags of coins and the pricey First Spouse products.
Aside from the large adjustment to the Uncirculated Silver Eagle coins mentioned previously, no significant adjustments were made last week. The 2016 Presidential $1 circulating coin set (D-Mint, #16PC) was newly declared sold out, and all of the First Spouse half-ounce gold coins have been flagged as “limited” (although no specific cut-off date has yet been offered).
The following are the U.S. Mint’s cumulative sales figures for the reporting period ending Sunday, January 1, 2017. “LKS” indicates that the number given is the last known sales figure for a sold-out item. Mintage and product limits are indicated, where applicable; if a coin is in stock but is nearing sold-out status, or is on the 2016 “last chance” list, a link to the Mint’s product page is provided. Items in italics are scheduled for release but are not yet available; items in bold are appearing on the report for the first time. ❑

The most recent U.S. Mint sales figures as of Sunday January 1, 2017 reveal that the 2016-D National Park Service uncirculated clad half dollar @ 21,335 is now the new lowest mintage coins of its type as compared to the 2013-D 5 Star Generals uncirculated clad half dollar @ 38,095. The second lowest mintage modern commemorative gold coin is the 2016-W National Park Service Gold $5 uncirculated coin with a mintage of 5,201. There were 742 of these coins sold during their final week. However, the lowest mintage modern commemorative gold coin remains as the 1997-W Jackie Robinson uncirculated gold $5 coin with a mintage of 5,174. For comparison, 5,201 – 5,174 = 27 is the difference between the lowest mintage modern gold commemorative coin versus the second lowest mintage modern gold commemorative coin.
Looks like new lows in sales for 2015 proof and mint sets too, which I understand went off sale at the end of the year. If this hobby ever gets popular with the masses again we will be rich!
Dwight, the way I read it is that we have a new low for the modern commemorative coin in the 2016 National Park Gold proof coin with a mintage of 4,915. Or am I missing something here. This was a coin I bought early on. Didn’t catch on but that’s good news I guess.
Ok, Got it. The 3 coin proof set. Takes it to 4915 + 5000 = 9915
More like 4915 + 14595 = 19110. Maybe I should have bought the uncirculated coin.
The most recent U.S. Mint sales figures as of January 22, 2017 reveal that the lowest mintage modern commemorative gold coin is now the 2016-W National Park Service Gold $5 Uncirculated coin with a mintage of 5,164. The second lowest mintage modern commemorative gold coin is the 1997-W Jackie Robinson Uncirculated gold $5 coin with a mintage of 5,174. The 2016-D National Park Service Uncirculated clad half dollar @ 21,016 is the lowest mintage coin of that type.
