On March 25, 2013, the Bulgarian National Bank released a partially gold plated commemorative coin featuring Tsar Samuil, who was the Emperor of the First Bulgarian Empire from 997 to October 6, 1014. This is the latest release in the Bulgarian Medieval Rulers coin series.
The obverse contains an interpretation of the medieval miniature – the death of Tsar Samuil. This portion of the coin is gold plated. Beneath is the logo of the Bulgarian National Bank, with the face value of the coin ‘10 ЛЕВА’ (BGN 10) and the year of issue ‘2013’. An inscription above reads ‘БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА’ (Bulgarian National Bank).
On the reverse is a scene from a a battle between the Bulgarian and Byzantine armies. The inscriptions ‘СРЕДНОВЕКОВНИ БЪЛГАРСКИ ВЛАДЕТЕЛИ’ (Medieval Bulgarian Rulers) and ‘ЦАР САМУИЛ’ (Tsar Samuil) appear within the outer circumference bounded by a dotted ring.
Each coin is struck in 92.5% silver with a weight of 23.33 grams and diameter of 38.61 mm. The mintage is limited to 4,000 pieces. The design is credited to Ivan Todorov, Todor Todorov, and Georgi Todorov.
