The American Numismatic Association’s Summer Seminar is being held in Colorado Springs this week, and yesterday the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) held a public meeting on the campus of Colorado College from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Among the topics discussed by the committee were possible designs for the five 2018 America the Beautiful quarters, which had been considered by the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) on June 16. The CCAC’s recommendations are included below along with the Mint’s descriptions of each design.
MI-12 depicts Chapel Rock with the white pine growing atop.
MN-06 depicts a common loon with a rock cliff in the background.
GA-03 depicts a loggerhead sea turtle swimming along the undeveloped beach of Cumberland Island.
RI-10 features piping plovers on the rocky beach in front of the North Light lighthouse.
The CCAC was not able to reach a consensus on designs submitted for Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, which will also be featured on an America the Beautiful quarter in 2018. The committee has requested that the Mint solicit revisions to the available designs for that site.
Recommendations made by the CCAC and the CFA will now be forwarded to the U.S. Treasury Secretary. The complete portfolio of 2018 design candidates can be viewed here.
