The Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre — Casa Real de la Moneda has released new silver Proof coins which remember Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934), a Spanish doctor and scientist who specialised in histology and pathological anatomy. Cajal is credited with developing a revolutionary new theory that came to be called the “doctrine of the neuron,” establishing the neuron or nerve cell, and is considered the father of neuroscience. This finding was instrumental in the recognition of the neuron’s fundamental role in the nervous function and in gaining a modern understanding of the nerve impulse.
The reverse of the coin includes an image of the Spanish scientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal, which is based on a photograph taken of the professor later in his life. On the left half is a representation of one of Cajal’s own drawings depicting an axial section of the retina. Above the primary design is the denomination 10 EURO, and along the lower edge is the inscription AÑO DE INVESTIGACIÓN SANTIAGO RAMÓN Y CAJAL 2022 (“Year of Research Santiago Ramón y Cajal 2022”). The obverse of the coin depicts an effigy of HM King Felipe VI facing to the left. The year of issue 2022 is placed just below the King’s likeness.
