The Casa Real de Espana in conjunction with the Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre have announced their first collector’s coins for 2015 which highlight one of Europe’s most important anniversaries this year, that of the 70th anniversary of continued peace between nations since the end of the Second World War. Despite the differences between countries in Europe – some of them high-profile, the European people have managed to keep the option of all-out war and armed conflict between their countries off the table and as a consequence of a diplomatic approach, the continent has experienced the longest period of peace in its modern history. With this in mind, the EUROPA Star series, a programme open to all countries in Europe who wish to contribute to, have chosen this the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the emergence of peace in our time to highlight for 2015.
Spain’s issue in the EUROPA series includes the depiction of a stylized image of a dove holding an olive tree sprig in its beak, the now familiar and universal symbol of peace. Text included in the design includes “70 ANOS DE PAZ” along with the coin’s denomination and the EUROPA star insignia. The obverse includes the effigy of HM King Felipe VI along with the legend “FELIPE VI REY DE SEPANA” around his portrait. These are the first proof quality coins and the silver issue is the first crown-sized coin to be issued bearing the effigy of the King since his accession in June 2014.
