The government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands has announced the release (11th February) of new 50-pence coins which bear the design that poignantly reflects the universal role of nurses, their endless dedication, and values.
The design on the new 50-pence coin serves as a reminder to us all that the selfless dedication and determination of nurses and the profession as a whole. As the world continues to navigate itself out of a pandemic with consequences in terms of infectious rates not seen in more than a hundred years, front line workers, including nurses, often risk their own lives and well-being as they carry out their duties and practise their profession.
The seven-sided 50-pence coins are produced by the Pobjoy Mint at their facilities in Surrey, England, on behalf of the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands’ treasury. The reverse side features a heart in the centre with a heartbeat trace running across it. The heart itself is surrounded by the beautiful feathered wings of an angel, symbolising the protection the care workers give to those affected. The six “C’s” of Compassion in Practice are shown in the surround, along with the coat of arms of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands. The coins’ denomination is represented with the text 50p at the bottom of the primary design.
The obverse side includes an effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II, which is an exclusive design of the Pobjoy Mint. The year of issue, 2021, is placed below the Queen’s likeness.
