The National Bank of Slovakia have launched (19th March) their latest coin in the “Conservation series.” This is the second coin to highlight protected historical areas in Slovakia.
This year’s issue focuses on the Roman-era settlement of Trenčín. Along with Nitra and Bratislava, (Slovakia’s capital) Trenčín is one of the oldest Slovak cities, chronicled as early as in the 11th century. Its strategic location near three Carpathian mountain passes was on the crossroads of many commercial routes giving greater importance to the region for trade. Trenčín is best known for the “Roman inscription”. Placed on the rock below the Trenčín Castle and dating from 179 AD, it denotes the site’s Latin name as Laugaricio and is the most northern evidence of the presence of Roman soldiers in central Europe.
Struck by the world-renown Kremnica Mint, the obverse of the coin which is designed by Karol Ličko, depicts Trenčín Castle, a fortress whose primary buildings were added at the beginning of the 14th century along with a fragment of the Roman inscription written on the castle rock and an outline of the ramparts. To the lower right of the coin is the state emblem of the Slovak Republic, positioned below the year 2012 and above the country designation SLOVENSKO. On the right edge are the stylized letters KL, the initials of the artist.
The reverse of the coin is designed by artist Miroslav Rónai a includes a illustration of the Trenčín Historical Preservation Area from a bird’s eye view, showing major architectural landmarks including the castle and “triangular” square. Along the left side are the words PAMIATKOVÁ REZERVÁCIA (Historical Preservation Area) and along the right side is the name TRENČÍN. The denomination 20 EURO appears in the lower-left part of the coin. In the lower right are the mintmark of the Kremnica Mint and the stylized letters MR, the initials of the designer.
The coin is struck in sterling silver with a weight of 33.6 grams and a diameter of 40 mm. A proof strike is available with a mintage of 7,500 pieces and a FDC version is available with a mintage limit of 5,900 pieces.
