The United States Mint has started accepting orders for the 2013 Proof American Gold Eagles. These 22 karat gold coins are available individually in four different sizes as well as within a complete four coin set.
The obverse design of the coin features Augustus Saint Gaudens’ classic full length figure of Liberty, holding a lit torch in her right hand and olive branch in her left. Fifty stars surround the image, with the rays of the rising sun and the US Capitol building in the background. The reverse design by Miley Busiek features a depiction of a male eagle carrying an olive branch to a nest containing a female eagle and eaglets. This same design has been used for the American Gold Eagle since its introduction in 1986.
The 2013 Proof Gold Eagles are available in one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce sizes, carrying legal tender denominations of $50, $25, $10, and $5, respectively. The coins are struck at the West Point Mint to proof quality and carry the “W” mint mark. The United States Mint has established a product limit for each ordering option, which serves to establish an overall mintage limit for each coin.
