The United States Mint has started accepting orders for the 2013 Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Silver Dollars. Limited to a mintage of 350,000, these commemorative coins were authorized under Public Law 111-86 to mark the 100th anniversary of the organization.
The coins were officially launched at a ceremony on Capitol Hill attended by United State Treasurer Rosie Rios, CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA Anna Maria Chávez, and members of the Honorary Congressional Girl Scout Troop. One of the coins was presented during the Girl Scout Women and Girls Leadership Breakfast in the Caucus Room of the Cannon House Office Building.
Rosie Rios said, “Today, the United States Mint launches the 2013 Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Silver Dollar Coin honoring 100 years of courage, confidence, and character. And we will issue up to 350,000 of these silver dollars, with sale surcharges authorized to further Girl Scout programs such as financial literacy and empowerment, business, and self-reliance.”
The obverse design of the silver dollar features a depiction of three girls intended to represent the different ages and the diversity of the Girl Scouts of the USA. An inscription above includes “Courage, Confidence, Character” which are key elements from the Girl Scouts mission statement. Additional inscriptions include the “2013” date, the motto “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, and the 100th anniversary Trefoil symbol.
The reverse design features the iconic trefoil/profiles symbol of the organization with inscriptions “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “Girl Scouts”, and the denomination “$1”.
The obverse was designed by US Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by US Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill. The reverse was designed by Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Chris Costello and sculpted by US Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.
The United States Mint is currently offering individual proof versions of the coin priced at $54.95 and individual uncirculated versions priced at $50.95.
