The United States Mint recently began sales of the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. This five coin set includes each of this year’s quarter designs struck in a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper.
The quarters included in the set represent the sixth to tenth releases in the ongoing America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The reverse designs for this year feature Gettysburg National Miliatary Park, Glacier National Park, Olympic National Park, Vicksburg National Military Park, and Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The series will continue through 2021, featuring a different national park or site in each of the 50 states, 5 U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia.
Proof coins are struck at the San Francisco Mint and carry the “S” mint mark. The coins are minted using specially prepared, highly polished dies, which produce coins with mirrored backgrounds and frosted cameo images.
The product is released at a time when the price of silver has risen to a 38 year high. The rapid rise in the price of silver has already resulted in the US Mint revising the offering price of the product to $42.95 from the originally announced $39.95. The silver content per set is 0.90420 troy ounces, yielding a current silver value of $34.83.
