2009 Proof Gold Buffalo Sales Reach 27,955

The US Mint has released their latest weekly sales report, which provides updated numbers for the closely watched 2009 Proof Gold Buffalo coin. This product went on sale October 29, 2009. In the first three days, sales had reached 19,468, nearly matching the full year total for last year's offering.  After ten days of sales, the total has now reached 27,955.

The one ounce proof American Gold Buffalo has been offered by the United States Mint since 2006. Until this year, sales had experienced a decline each year, with 246,267 sold in 2006, 58,998 sold in 2007, and 19,591 sold in 2008. For 2008, the Mint had also offered fractional versions of the proof coin, but these offerings were discontinued.

Other highlights of this week's sales report include larger increases for nearly all of the annual proof and uncirculated mint set offerings. These products have been traditionally been given as gifts for the holiday season. Some early holiday shopping may be contributing to the increased sales levels. The 2009 Proof Set has now sold 1,245,834 units and the 2009 Uncirculated Mint Set has sold 540,257 units.
