The Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda or INCM have issued (5th May) a new coin commemorating the Fatima Santuary as part of the celebration of the centenary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. The anniversary has not only significant socio-cultural relevance in Portugal but also international support throughout the Catholic world.
Consecrated to the Virgin Mary, the sanctuary is one of the most important Marian Shrines in the world. Some four million people visit Fatima each year, drawn by apparitions of the Virgin Mary reported by three shepherd children in 1917. According to the tradition, the Virgin revealed the so-called three secrets of Fatima, which consist of prophecies about the future.
The design of the coin, which is minted in cupro-nickel, silver, and gold, is the work of Portuguese sculptor Clara Menéres. The obverse depicts an image of the Virgin inspired by the creation of the santeiro José Thandim, with rosary, holm, and crown. The legend surrounding the field reads 1917 · APARIÇÕES DE Na Sa DE FÁTIMA · 2017.
The reverse includes the Portuguese coat of arms framed by a wreath of leaves along with the denomination of €2,50.
