The Perth Mint has unveiled the designs for upcoming the 2014 Year of the Horse Gold and Silver Coins. The .9999 gold and .999 silver coins represent the seventh release within the Australian Lunar Series II, which features the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. The majority of the gold and silver bullion coins will be available worldwide starting on September 2, 2013, with the first numismatic versions to follow on September 3.
People born within the date range of January 31, 2014 to February 18, 2015 will be born within the Year of the Horse. Previous date ranges have included the years 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, and 2002. Those born under the influence of this sign are said to be hardworking, sociable, optimistic, and energetic.
The reverse design for the gold coins features a horse galloping amidst a stylized scene of mountains and clouds. The Chinese character for “horse” appears above with the inscription “Year of the Horse” below. The Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark also appears. The obverse design contains the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the 2014 date, precious metal weight and fineness, and the legal tender denomination.
The 2014 Year of the Horse Gold Bullion Coins will be available in a wide array of sizes ranging from 1/20 ounce to 10 kilo. Maximum mintages of 30,000 of the 1 oz coins and only 10 of the 10 kilo coins have been established. The remaining sizes including 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo will be available without a mintage limit, however production will close at the end of 2014 when the Perth Mint will declare each coin’s official mintage.

The reverse design for the silver coins features two horses standing within a stylized Chinese landscape. The Chinese character for “horse” appears above the scene, while the inscription “Year of the Horse” appears below with the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark also incorporated. The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the 2014 date, precious metal content, and monetary denomination.
The 2014 Year of the Horse Silver Bullion Coins will be available in six different sizes. The popular 1 oz size has a maximum mintage of 300,000 pieces. For prior years of the series, the 1 oz silver bullion coins have sold out quickly. A maximum mintage of 200 pieces will apply to the 10 kilo size. The remaining 1/2 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo sized bullion coins do not have a stated maximum mintage. Production for these sizes will close at the end of 2014 when each coin’s mintage will be declared.

All of the gold bullion options with the exception of the 10 kilo coins will be available for worldwide release on September 2, 2013. The availability of the 10 kilo coins will be advised at a later date and made to order.
The 1/2 oz, 1 oz, and 2 oz silver bullion options will be available for worldwide release on September 2, 2013. The 5 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo sizes will be available on October 1, 2013. Once again, the 10 kilo size will be available at a later date and made to order.
On September 3, 2013 (AWST), the Perth Mint will begin sales of gold and silver proof versions of the coins. These numismatic versions will be subject to limited mintages, with some products often selling out quickly.
