The treasury of Tuvalu, along with the Perth Mint, have released new gold and silver Proof ingot coins on the 60th anniversary of the release of the first motion picture film featuring author Ian Fleming’s fictional secret agent in Her Majesty’s Secret Service, known as James Bond. Created by Fleming (1908–1964) in 1952, much of his reference to Britain’s secret intelligence service was gained while he was working for Britain’s Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War. The literary character and franchise have been adapted for television, radio, comic strips, video games, and motion picture feature films, in particular.
In 1962, the first instalment of Bond under the title of Dr. No and starring Sean Connery made its debut. Since this time, a total of seven actors have portrayed Bond in film. Following Connery’s portrayal, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and more recently Daniel Craig have assumed the role over a series of twenty-five films, with the most recent, No Time to Die, being released in September 2021. The Bond franchise has become the longest continually running film series of all time, having grossed over $7.040 billion in total worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film series to date. Eon Productions, the company behind the production of the Bond films, operate out of Pinewood Studios in the UK.
The coins are produced by the Perth Mint from their facilities in Western Australia on behalf of the treasury of Tuvalu and are designed by Sean Rogers. Reflecting Bond’s skill at Baccarat, the coins take on the shape of playing cards and features the official 60th-anniversary logo. Black shading adds an additional enhancement to the design on the silver option.
The obverse includes the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II with the text ELIZABETH II TUVALU placed above the Queen’s portrait with 100 DOLLARS 2022 (gold) or 1 DOLLAR 2022 (silver).
