The Perth Mint has released a new two-ounce version of its Chinese Ancient Mythical Creatures High Relief Silver Coin. The issue features an antiqued finish and follows up on previously issued five-ounce and one-ounce coins with the same design.
The new version is composed of two ounces of 99.9% silver and is available for $189.09 AUD ($141.21 USD). It measures 40.60 mm in diameter, 6 mm in thickness, and has a mintage limited to 1,500 pieces.
The reverse was designed by Ing Ing Jong and features four Chinese ancient mythical creatures: the blue dragon, the white tiger, the red phoenix, and the black tortoise. The item’s product page notes that each creature is a guardian of one of four “heavenly quadrants marking the beginning and end of the winter and summer solstices, and the autumn and spring equinoxes.” The animals are each associated with a respective virtue, color, and element. A Yin-Yang symbol is placed at the center of the design, while CHINESE ANCIENT MYTHICAL CREATURES is inscribed along the rim of the coin.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 2 OZ 999 SILVER, 2016, 2 DOLLARS, and TUVALU, the country of issue, inscribed along the rim.
Each coin is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. For more information on the 2016 Chinese Ancient Mythical Creatures 2 oz Silver Antiqued High Relief Coin, please visit the Web site of the Perth Mint.
