The Perth Mint has continued several annual series with new 2016 releases, including two silver coins intended to mark special occasions.
The first of these special occasion coins is the 2016 Wedding 1 oz. Silver Proof Coin, which is composed of an ounce of 99.9% silver, costs $99.09 AUD ($68.47 USD), and has no listed mintage limit.
The coin’s reverse was designed by Jennifer McKenna and features a depiction of a bride and groom embracing on their wedding day. Two gold-colored rings interlock to the right of the image, with CONGRATULATIONS, 1 oz 999 SILVER, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark inscribed in the field. The coin’s denomination is one Australian dollar.
Next up is the 2016 Newborn Baby 1/2 Silver Proof Coin, which is composed of 1/2 ounce of 99.9% silver, costs $59.09 AUD ($40.83 USD), and will be issued on a mint-to-order basis.
The reverse was designed by Aleysha Howarth and bears an image of an Australian kookaburra carrying a newborn in swaddling cloth, adding a local twist to the common image of a stork bringing a baby. Australian plant life is included around the edge of the design, as are the inscriptions CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BABY and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark. The coin’s denomination is 50 cents AUD.
The Mint has also released the 2016 Always Together 1/2 ounce Silver Proof Coin featuring two puppies. The coin is composed of 1/2 ounce of silver that is 99.9% pure and has a mintage limited to 7,500 pieces. It can be purchased for $59.09 AUD ($40.83 USD).
This reverse design was also created by Aleysha Howarth and features two Labrador puppies rendered in color, with paw prints, bones, a food bowl, and a ball engraved in the surrounding field. Inscribed on this side of the coin is ALWAYS TOGETHER, the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark, and 1/2 oz 999 SILVER. Issued as legal tender in TUVALU, the coin’s denomination is 50 cents.
Finally, the Mint has released its 2016 Snugglepot & Cuddlepie 1/2 oz. Silver Proof Coin, which is composed of 1/2 ounce of 99.9% silver, costs $62.73 AUD ($43.35 USD), and has a mintage limited to 5,000 pieces.
The reverse, designed by Ing Ing Jong, includes a color image of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, characters first introduced in May Gibbs’ 1918 Australian children’s book, Tales of Snugglepot & Cuddlepie. The names of the characters and the author are inscribed in silver at the top of the design. This 50-cent coin has been issued as Australian legal tender.
All of the above issues share an obverse image of Queen Elizabeth II, rendered by Ian Rank-Broadley. Inscribed along the rim is ELIZABETH II, 2016, the country of issue, and the monetary denomination.
