The Perth Mint has issued its 2016 Mini Roo Gold Coin, which is composed of a half gram of 99.99% gold and is available for $54.09 AUD ($41.43 USD).
This issue is meant to provide an affordable way to purchase a quality gold coin as a gift or collector’s item. Its low price is achieved by keeping the coin very small; it measures just 11.60 mm in diameter. As a point of comparison, a U.S. dime has a diameter of 17.9 mm.
The coin’s reverse features an image of a kangaroo with the inscriptions 0.5 GRAM, 9999 GOLD, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark. The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, with ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA 2016, and 2 DOLLARS inscribed along the rim.
This issue comes packaged in a protective acrylic capsule that is held in a wallet-sized card, according to the item’s product page. There is no listed mintage limit for the coin.
The Perth Mint’s Mini Roo Gold Coin series launched in 2010; each year features a unique kangaroo reverse image. For more information on the 2016 Mini Roo, please visit the Web site of the Perth Mint.
