This year, the Perth Mint’s Christmas release incorporates an “augmented reality” feature which allows the reverse design of the coin to be transformed into a multimedia portrayal of Santa Claus via their smartphone or tablet.
The multimedia portrayal can be experienced through the free DAQRI application, available from the iTunes App Store or Google Play. After downloading the app, a user can hold their device’s camera over the reverse of the coin (or an image of the reverse of the coin) to experience imagery and music of Santa delivering the Christmas coin on Christmas Eve.
The special feature is created through “augmented reality” which allows the view of a real world object through a digital device to be supplemented by computer generated sound and graphics. This is the first time that the Perth Mint has incorporated the feature into one of their coin offerings.
The reverse design of the coin itself features a depiction the silhouette of Santa Claus on a sleigh pulled by reindeer against the full moon. The colored background includes a sky filled with snowflakes and a snow covered house below. The words “Season’s Greetings” appear above with the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark also incorporated. The reverse was designed by Jennifer McKenna.
The obverse of the coin includes the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with inscriptions indicating the precious metal weight and purity, the 2014 date, and the Australian legal tender face value.
Each coin is struck in 1/2 oz of 99.9% pure silver to proof quality with a diameter of 36.60 mm. The coins are housed in a presentation case and custom designed shipper with a numbered certificate of authenticity. No more than 5,000 of the 2014 Christmas 1/2 oz Silver Proof Coins will be released.
