The Perth Mint of Australia has release the latest monthly sales figures for gold and silver sold as coins and minted products. Sales for gold and silver both rose sharply from the previous month likely driven by the release of new designs for popular series of gold and silver bullion coins.
New silver bullion coins launched on September 2, 2013 included the 2014-dated Australian Lunar Series II Year of the Horse coins available in 1/2 oz, 1 oz, and 2 oz sizes and the 2014-dated Australian Silver Kookaburra coins available in 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo sizes. The lunar coins features a depiction of two horses within a stylized Chinese landscape, and the kookaburra coins feature the iconic bird sitting on a tree branch surrounded by gum leaves.
For the month of September 2013, sales of silver coins and minted products reached 961,977.07 troy ounces, representing a rise of more than 39% from the previous month. Despite the month to month rise, the latest total was down by about 23% from the year ago period of September 2012. This may suggest that despite the rise in sales for the new designs, the reaction was not as enthusiastic as last year’s release of the 2013 Year of the Snake and 2013 Australian Kookaburra coins, which had taken place in September 2012.

The new gold bullion coins launched on September 2, 2013 were the 2014 Australian Lunar Series II Year of the Horse Gold Coins, available in 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz , 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, 1 kilo, and 10 kilo sizes. The design features a horse galloping amidst a stylized scene of mountains and clouds.
Sales of gold coins and minted products for September 2013 reached 68,488.06 troy ounces. This amount was more than double the prior month total, but marked a decline of 15.5% compared to the year ago period. Once again, the reaction to the launch of the Year of the Horse coins may not have been as enthusiastic as last year’s release of the 2013 Year of the Snake Gold Coins which occurred in September 2012.
In the month of October, gold sales may remain elevated due to the launch of the 2014 Australian Kangaroo Gold Coins on October 1, 2013. These bullion coins are available in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, and 1 kilo sizes. The four smaller sizes feature a depiction of a kangaroo against the background of a fenced rural property. The larger size features the classic red kangaroo design by Dr. Stuart Devlin.
