The Perth Mint has released their 2021-dated gold two-ounce Proof Kangaroos minted in high-relief. Begun in 2014 on the 25th anniversary for this popular series, the two-ounce gold is produced in very small quantities and on planchets that are thicker than ordinary gold coins ensuring deeper recesses and higher relief for the chosen design, which changes annually. First issued in 1989, the Australian Kangaroo has become an iconic annual gold and silver coin series portraying one of the country’s most recognised animal symbols. Distinctive in the wildlife kingdom for the way they hop on elongated hind legs and rear “joeys” in the female’s pouch, tens of millions of kangaroos inhabit diverse landscapes across the vast Australian continent.
Designed by Natasha Muhl, the coin’s reverse portrays a crouching kangaroo with waratah and kangaroo paw native Australian plants in the background. The design incorporates the inscription AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO placed above the primary design. The Perth Mint’s traditional “P” mintmark, the coin’s weight, purity, and 2021. With a thickness of 5.5 millimetres., the strike is especially high with the result being greater detail seen in the design shown on the reverse.
The Commonwealth effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II created by British engraver Jody Clark is seen on the obverse along with a background of rays extending towards the coins’ lettering placed around the Queen’s portrait. The denomination of 200 DOLLARS is included beneath the Queen’s likeness.
