(Newport Beach, California) — The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) is offering special labels for 2018 Preamble to the Declaration of Independence Platinum Proof Coins. For 2018, the U.S. Mint at West Point is releasing the coin celebrating life.
This year, and for the next two years, the Mint will release a new platinum Proof coin. In 2018, the coin celebrates life, for 2019 it will be liberty, and for 2020, the Mint will release a coin celebrating Americans’ pursuit of happiness. PCGS designed a special label for each coin.
The U.S. Mint at West Point will release the “Life” Proof platinum coin for sale 12 p.m. EST January 25, 2017. The coin contains 1.0005 troy ounces of 99.95% platinum. It has a diameter of 1.287 inches and carries a $100 denomination. The obverse features an image of Liberty similar to the Braided Hair Liberty of some U.S. vintage coins. She carries a child on her hip sowing seeds. In the background are mountains and fields with a river running through the fields and a large tree, all symbolizing life. The word Life is written in script in the field off Liberty’s shoulder.
The reverse of the three coins is common, with a three-quarter image of an eagle with an olive branch in its talons and wings outstretched.
“When Mark [Stephenson, PCGS vice president] asked me to create a label series for these coins, I took a look at the Mint’s designs and was struck by their elegant, agrarian, and mystic designs. I was inspired to bring that artwork into the labels, and bring them to life with color, stretching and modifying them to fit our label layout,” explains Jack Fitch, product development manager at PCGS. The reverse of each label is a stylized version of the PCGS label, featuring the year, denomination, mint mark, and PCGS certification information.
“The Preamble to the Declaration of Independence coins are really profound statements of all that is American,” said Mark Stephenson. He continued, “These special labels bring together the three-year set in a beautiful way. It’s a cool project that we’re really proud to be a part of.”
