The government and treasury of the Pacific island of Niue have issued (15th January) new collector silver Proof and colour coins which feature Mickey Mouse’s love interest, Minnie Mouse, who dazzles us as she celebrates Carnival. The coin is part of a new series which was begun with silver Proof coins featuring the world’s favourite mouse, Mickey, which was released late in December 2018. Those who grew up with the charismatic little mouse happily celebrated the 90th anniversary of the iconic animated cartoon character who was created in 1928 by Walt Disney. Mickey and Minnie were both created in 1928 and debuted on the 15th May in Plane Crazy, which was the first-ever Mickey Mouse cartoon released, albeit without sound.
Minerva Mouse, to use her correct name, was designed in the fashion of a “flapper” girl, which was a fad prevalent in the 1920s. Her main outfit consisted of a short flapper girl dress that often revealed her distinctive patched knickers. In the 1929 cartoon The Karnival Kid which she appeared alongside Mickey, it was revealed that she wears black stockings which were also fashionable among flapper girls. Her over-sized shoes are probably her most distinctive article of clothing.
An interesting bit of trivia about the most famous mouse couple in the world is that Mickey and Minnie Mouse have never been married onscreen. However, during an interview with Walt Disney conducted in 1933, he revealed that “in private life, Mickey is married to Minnie”
The coins are produced by the New Zealand Mint at their facilities in Auckland, on behalf of the Treasury of Niue. The reverse side of the second coin in the series depicts a sweet and charming Minnie Mouse in her bright and colourful attire, holding on to a red balloon and standing atop an engraved ticket stub featuring her name. The obverse side includes an effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II created by British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend, or text, around the Queen’s likeness consists of the issuing authority, year of release, and denomination.
