The treasury of Niue has released new memorial coins in tribute to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on the 8th September 2022 after an astonishing 70 years as monarch of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II passed away the same year the United Kingdom and Commonwealth enthusiastically marked her Platinum Jubilee. The Queen was the first-ever monarch to reach this milestone anniversary. Celebrations from London to Ottawa, Canberra to Auckland, along with cities and countries on every continent, took part in parties and events to show their appreciation and gratitude to a Queen who had dedicated her entire life to the service of all her peoples, wherever they were. Her state funeral was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury in Westminster Abbey, the same cathedral where Queen Elizabeth II was married in November 1947 and where she was crowned in June 1953. The late Queen was buried at Windsor Chapel next to her husband, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away 18 months prior. On the day of her passing, the Queen’s successor, the Prince of Wales, was henceforth King and officially proclaimed as Charles III the next day by the Lord Chamberlain.
The 2022-dated silver Proof coins are produced by the New Zealand Mint at their facilities in Auckland on behalf of the treasury of Niue. The reverse side replicates a well-known Queen Elizabeth II as she posed for her 1958 portrait at home in Buckingham Palace. She is wearing the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara with drop pearls that was a gift to her from her grandmother, Queen Mary, and a diamond and pearl trefoil crown necklace, created for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. This particular necklace was said to be one of Queen Victoria’s favourite pieces of royal jewellery. The Queen is also wearing two royal orders on her sash, one presented to her by her grandfather, King George V, and the other by her father, King George VI. Above the Queen’s image is the text QUEEN ELIZABETH II, which is placed along the edge. On each side are floral garlands and the memorial years 1926 and 2022. Below the years is text attesting to the coins’ weight, purity, and fineness, 1 oz 999 FINE SILVER. The obverse side includes the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of the late Queen with the issuing authority NIUE and the coins’ denomination of TWO DOLLARS, with the year of minting 2022 laced below the Queen’s likeness.
