The Perth Mint has started accepting orders for the first two coins of a new series featuring famous ships from legend and literature. The series is entitled “Famous Ships That Never Sailed” and just 3,000 of each silver coin will be released.
The first coin features a depiction of the Flying Dutchman floating above the rough sea amidst lightning. This phantom ship is doomed to sail the seas for eternity and when sighted is believed to foreshadow disaster for superstitious sailors.
The second coin features a depiction of the Pequod and the giant white whale Moby Dick. This famous ship was commanded by Captain Ahab in his obsessive pursuit of the whale in the classic novel Moby Dick.
Both coins are issued as legal tender under the authority of the government of Tuvalu and carry the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The 1 ounce 99.9% pure silver coins are struck to proof quality with a diameter of 40.60 mm and come housed in a wooden display case in the shape of a book. A numbered certificate of authenticity is included. No more than 3,000 of each coin will be released.
