Mount Rushmore National Memorial Quarter

Mount Rushmore, located in Keystone, South Dakota, was originally conceived as part of a plan to promote tourism in the Black Hills area of the state. Construction began in 1927, and continued even after the death of the sculptor Gutzon Borglum in March 1941; his son took on the construction. The concept was a head-to-waist depictions of the presidents, but due to a lack of funding, the project was concluded in late October 1941. The National Park Service took control over the memorial in 1933.
