Michael White of the U.S. Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications has confirmed that the mintage limit for 2016 American Eagle One-Ounce Platinum Proof Coin has been set at 10,000 units, more than twice the limit established for last year’s issue, which was set at 4,000 coins. The final mintage for the 2015 Platinum Eagle came to 3,881 pieces.
Despite the fact that last year’s issue effectively sold out in 10 minutes, the significantly larger mintage awarded to the 2016 Platinum Eagle comes as a bit of a surprise. Production totals for coins in this series have consistently fallen in recent years, from 5,745 sold in 2013, to 4,596 sold in 2014, to 3,881 in 2015. The Mint also had difficulty procuring platinum planchets last year, which postponed the launch of the 2015 issue.
The 2016 Platinum Eagle Proof coin will be released on June 30. For more information on the U.S. Mint’s upcoming product releases, please visit its Web site.
