The Banque Centrale du Luxembourg has announced (9th May) the issue of a special €2 coin in celebration of the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, a contemporary road bridge that passes 74 meters over Pfaffenthal, a small quarter in Luxembourg City, from Kirchberg to Limpertsberg. The bridge was designed by German architect Egon Jux, whose winning submission was successful over 68 other entries in a competition initiated by the government of Luxembourg in 1957.
Initial construction began in 1962, followed by an official ground-breaking ceremony on June 20, 1963. The ceremony was presided over by the country’s head of state, Grand Duchess Charlotte. The bridge was completed in 1965, and was officially opened in October of 1966; it was named in honor of the Grand Duchess, though she was no longer Luxembourg’s head of state, having abdicated in 1964 in favor of her eldest son Jean, the new Grand Duke.
Although the bridge is a well-known landmark in this small landlocked Grand Duchy, it also has an unfortunate reputation as over 100 people have taken their lives by jumping from it since its opening in 1966.
The coin is struck by the Royal Dutch Mint on behalf of the Banque Centrale du Luxembourg. It carries an image of the bridge with the text PONT GRAND-DUCHESE CHARLOTTE. A cameo-type portrait of the current Grand Duke Henri is positioned above the primary design, with the commemorative years 2016 and 1966 placed above and below the image of the bridge. The reverse side is that of the current €2 circulation motif, originally introduced in the euro zone in 2002.
