The Latvijas Banka has issued (19th July) a 2-euro commemorative coin featuring the image of a cow, a prime symbol of the Latvian farming industry and unspoiled countryside. For as long as anyone can remember, cows have been an integral part of Latvian farming not only for the country’s substantial agricultural economy but also as part of the countryside routine. The Latvian Brown, which is the main breed of dairy cows in Latvia, is a productive and resilient animal of relatively low maintenance and long life span, and is especially well-adapted to the local climate.
As a source of comfort and familiarity, one is pleased to spot the Latvian Brown grazing and lazily browsing a field amidst the rural scenery. The poet Imants Ziedonis (1933 – 2013), who played an important role in formulating philosophical imagery for the designs on the renewed lats banknotes and coins from 1992, had poetically represented the interrelation between the human and the cow’s life cycle:
And while a wee brown calf trundles through a brown cow, you too have time to till the future now.
The coin is struck by the Mint of Lithuania on behalf of the Latvijas Bankas and is designed by Gunārs Lūsis (graphic design) and Jānis Strupulis (plaster model). The image was originally featured on the 2-lats circulation coin and has been revived once more to grace the new Latvian 2-euro piece as a commemorative coin. The reverse includes the common design seen on all euro-zone circulation coinage.
