Latvia Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Restored Lats Currency

The Bank of Latvia have issued a new silver coin which marks the 20th year anniversary that saw the restoration of the national currency, the Lats in March 1993.

After the restoration of independence, it became evident that a national currency separate from the existing ruble currency would be needed in order to reinvigorate and build Latvia’s economy and financial future. It was agreed at the time that the previous currency, the Lats – in use from 1922 until 1940, should be re-introduced as soon as possible after the recognized date of the re-establishment of Latvia’s independence, which occurred on the 21st August 1991 – and the Lats was adopted in March of 1993. Banknotes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 Lats were introduced with coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 1 and 2 Lats accompanying the notes.

Latvia 20 Lats Silver Salmon

The new collector coin is a replica of the current one lat coin currently in circulation. Struck at the Lithuanian Mint, the coin depicts a salmon, which is a symbol of Latvia’s abundant water resources. The salmon is shown jumping out of the water from left to right. The numeral 20, with the inscription LATS in a semicircle beneath it, is centered in the lower part of the coin. The coin is designed by Gunārs Lūsis who is a master-fisherman himself.

The reverse includes a rendition of the large coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia, with the year 2013 inscribed below, and is placed in the center. The inscriptions LATVIJAS and REPUBLIKA, each arranged in a semicircle, are placed above and beneath the central motif.
