The Perth Mint has started accepting orders for a high relief Australian Lunar Series II 2012 Year of the Dragon Gold Coin. This coin features a stunning high relief design minted to proof quality in 1 ounce of 99.99% pure gold.
People born between the dates of January 13, 2012 and February 9, 2013 are said to be born in the Year of the Dragon. The dragon is the only mythological creature included within the Chinese zodiac. People born in dragon years are said to be confident, enterprising, independent, self-assured, brave and passionate.
The reverse design for the coin features a representation of a dragon with a symbolic pearl of wisdom. The inscription “Year of the Dragon” and the Chinese character for Dragon appear below. The obverse contains the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
Both the obverse and reverse are minted on concave surfaces to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die. The coins have a maximum thickness of 5.00 mm and diameter of 27.30 mm.
The Perth Mint has indicated that no more than 388 of the coins will be issued worldwide, with only 38 available in Australia. Each coin is housed in a display case with an illustrated shipper and accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
