The Royal Canadian Mint has launched a charming new coin which illustrates one of life’s simple pleasures for so many around the world, that of fishing beside a lake.
Especially prevalent in many small towns dotted along the eastern seaboard and Maritime Provinces, the activity of fishing during the long warm summer afternoons takes on a life of its own. It is not uncommon even today to see signs on the doors of many small shops and offices saying “GONE FISHING” with proprietors taking the afternoon off in pursuit of the “the one that got away”, time away to relax and enjoy nature or simply something for that evening’s supper.
This new coin, created by Artist John Mantha – captures the priceless serenity of a father and child fishing from a dock, with the loyal family dog at their side. Above the depiction is the text “CANADA” and below is the coin’s denomination of “3 DOLLARS” with the year of issue “2013” just to the left. The obverse includes a portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
A nice idea for a Father’s day present, as was suggested on the RCM’s webpage!
