The Royal Mint has officially launched their eagerly anticipated gold proof & silver proof Britannia coin sets. Again they include a new rendition of the allegorical figure, Britannia, along with one of the smallest coins currently minted anywhere: the 1/40th gold & silver ounce size. The coins of “Britannia, the Changing Face of Britain” are issued in proof quality only and depict a new design separate from the ordinary bullion coins, which feature the Philip Nathan reverse. This year, the coins’ reverse side is created by Antony DuFort. Although this is DuFort’s first commission for The Royal Mint, his interpretation of this much-loved national figure was so admired by the Mint that it was included on the country’s new £2 2015-dated bi-metallic coin, bringing Britannia back to circulation coinage after a six-year absence.
The gold coin set includes sizes from five ounces down to 1/40th ounce and denominations from £500 to 50 pence. The silver sizes also range from five ounces to 1/40th ounce and in denominations of £10 down to just 5 pence. The nautical design has a contemporary, simple, and elegant feel, with the icon at the forefront, wearing her familiar Corinthian helmet and holding a trident on her right shoulder in a nod to her maritime might. A masted ship with billowing sails reinforces the traditional seafaring nature of Britain as an island nation—a notion Britannia personifies. As the Queen’s effigy was changed this year, the new set includes the new 2015 portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark. The denominations of each coin are included in the legend on the obverse.
