The National Bank of Georgia has issued new silver Proof collector coins which are in celebration of EuroBasket, considered the most important European basketball event of the year, both in terms of the sporting achievements of the participating countries and the status of the hosting country as an organiser of international importance.
The coins are produced by the state mint of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at their facilities in Stuttgart on behalf of the National Bank of Georgia. The design of the collectible coin was selected through an open competition, with those of Aleksandre Verulashvili (obverse) and Sofio Tsikaridze (reverse) winning. The obverse side of the coin includes a stylised image of a basketball shield and ball. On the right side, the denomination 5 ლარი (“5 Lari”) is shown in a stylised form. Along the upper-right edge is the inscription in Georgian script ქართული კალათბურთი — 100 წელი (“Georgian basketball — 100 years”) and along the lower-right edge is საქართველო GEORGIA, in both English and Georgian, with a small depiction of the EuroBasket trophy cup separating the text. The main feature shown on the reverse side of the coin is the EuroBasket 2022 logo, which was unveiled on the 16th December 2019 and is off-centred to the left, along with the inscription of the country and the city. In the background is the outline image of a basketball. The year of issue 2022 is seen in the lower-left part near the edge.
