The Monnaie de Paris has released the sixth design which is part of the collector coin series entitled “Aviation and Its History.” Starting in 2017, the collection when completed will consist of a coin series on aviation throughout the decades since manned flight began and is designed as a tribute to the aircraft that have made the most impact in the history of aviation. From the Spirit of Saint Louis to the most modern aircraft such as the A380, all eras and types of aircraft will be presented. For 2022, the designs focus on the Rafale Marine, which translates to “Navy Surge,” is an iconic aircraft of the French Navy. This combat aircraft developed for the French Navy and Air Force was delivered on the 18th May 2001 and entered service in 2002 first beginning with the navy.
The distinctive and unique designs on both the obverse and reverse sides are the work of Romain Hugault, a recognised specialist both in the world of aviation and in the world of comics, under the artistic direction of Joaquin Jimenez, senior engraver. The whole series shares a common obverse which features the profiles of two pilots symbolising different eras, both civilian and military aviation. Several airplane models are represented in flight, also marking different eras and uses as a tribute to the history of the airplane. The face value is shown at the bottom left as well as the initials RF, which represents REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE.
The reverse side includes a powerful representation of a Rafale in full approach with its landing hook deployed. In the background, the aircraft carrier is shown in the open sea. The naval aviation rosette is depicted in horizontal and vertical lines around the perimeter and as a backdrop. The logo of the Rafale is affixed to the marine’s anchor. The year of issue 2022 is seen just under the fly tail of the Rafale in flight.
