The Perth Mint of Australia has issued the final coins in the three year Discover Australia The Dreaming Series. The coins minted in silver, gold, and platinum feature images of Australian animals by Indigenous artist Darryl Bellotti. There are five different animals depicted, with a different design for each composition.
The 2011 releases feature the Dingo, Emu, Great White Shark, Kookaburra, and Tasmanian Devil. Last year, the animals included the Common Wombat, Frilled Neck Lizard, Koala, Platypus, and Saltwater Crocodile. For the first year of the series in 2009, the animal were the Brolga, Dolphin, Echidna, Kangaroo, and King Brown Snake.
The silver coins are struck in one ounce of 99.9% pure silver. Each coin has a diameter of 40.60 mm and thickness of 4.00 mm. The five different designs are available individually or as a five coin silver set. The 2011 silver coins have a maximum mintage of 10,000 per design.
The gold coins have a fineness of 99.99% and are issued in 1/2 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/25 oz sizes. Each size carries a different legal tender denomination. The 1/2 oz coins has a diameter of 25.60 mm, thickness of 2.40 mm, and mintage limit of 1,000 per design. The 1/10 oz coins have a diameter of 16.60 mm, thickness of 1.50 mm, and mintage limit of 2,500 per design. The 1/25 oz gold coins measure 14.60 mm in diameter, 1.40 mm in thickness, and are limited to 25,000 per design. The 2011 gold coins are available individually, or as five coin sets for each weight.
The Discover Australia The Dreaming Series platinum coins are struck in 99.95% fineness and come in 1/2 oz and 1/10 oz weights, with legal tender denominations of AUD 50 and AUD 15, respectively. The 1/2 oz coins measure 25.60 mm in diameter, 2.30 mm in thickness, and are limited to 1,000 for each design. The 1/2 oz coins measure 16.60 mm in diameter, 1.32 mm in thickness, and are limited to 2,500 for each design. Once again, each coin is available individually or as part of a five coin set for each weight.
