The People’s Bank of China has released (17th November) collector coins that highlight the XIII Winter Paralympic Games, which will be hosted in Beijing. The first Paralympic Games took place in Rome, Italy, in 1960 and featured 400 athletes from 23 countries. The Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games will be the 13th Winter Paralympic Games. They will be held from the 4th to the 13th March 2022 just after the closing of the Winter Olympiad. There are 6 major events (Paralympic alpine skiing, Paralympic biathlon, Paralympic Olympic cross-country skiing, Paralympic snowboarding, Paralympic ice hockey, wheelchair curling) and 78 events in total. It is expected that a total of 736 athletes are scheduled to compete for the gold, silver, and bronze medals up for grabs. The two coin releases are struck in gold and silver, which are designed with elements of support for the Paralympic Winter Games.
Five yuan — silver: The design on the obverse side of these rectangular-shaped coins consists of insignias representing six sports of the Winter Paralympic Games, supplemented by a combination of snowflakes and a downhill slope. To the lower-left half is the text Beijing 2022 in Braille with the coins’ denomination of 5 元 (“five yuan”) placed on the lower-right half. The text 北 京 2022 年 冬 残 奥 会 (“Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics”) is shown above the primary design along the upper edge.
80 yuan — gold: The design on the obverse side of the gold coin features Xu Rongrong — the mascot representing the Paralympic Games designed and created based on traditional lanterns with its name referencing both snow and warmth. Xu Rongrong is superimposed over a large snowflake with the commemorative text北 京 2022 年 冬 残 奥 会 (“Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics”) placed along the upper-left edge. The denomination of 80元 (“80 yuan”) can be seen just to the lower-left of the primary design.
The design on the reverse of both coins focuses on the emblem of the Paralympic Games, including references such as the Great Wall of China and snowflakes. The name of the country appears above the primary design along the edge and the year 2021 is shown below.
