The Royal Canadian Mint have issued a new, celebratory 2017 wedding coin. Designed to highlight the special day for all couples, and it provides a unique gift to mark the occasion. In many instances, long months of planning and preparation go into the big day—invitations, the venue, where to have the ceremony performed, the flowers, the menu, entertainment … and most of all, the attire; for every bride especially, the dress is all-important! Everything is arranged well beforehand to ensure a great time is had by all—the lucky couple, their friends, and their families. On the side of the guests, the choice of what to get the couple as a wedding gift can be a vital decision: something practical, indulgent, or just sentimental? Many wedding guests and family—most of them ardent coin collectors, themselves—know first-hand that a coin minted in precious metal is one of those unique gifts not likely to be replicated by any other guest, and that it is sure be saved by the wedding couple as a real keepsake to remember the day.
Designed by Canadian artist Sylvie Daigneault, the coin’s reverse incorporates a beautiful celebration of love and an artistic ode to marriage, an occasion when two individuals mark their commitment to each other. Fittingly, two different design elements—hearts and arabesque scrolls—come together in one intricately engraved pattern that forms a large heart shape. The text includes a celebratory message in both English and French: MARRIED IN 2017 and MARIAGE EN 2017, along with the denomination 20 DOLLARS below. The smaller hearts and the rim are selectively plated in rose-coloured gold.
Susanna Blunt’s effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II, which has been included on all Canadian circulation coins and many commemorative and collector coins since 2003, is seen on the obverse side of the coin. The effigy of the Queen is selectively plated in rose-coloured gold, as are the rim and the reeded edge (see angled view, below).
