The Royal Canadian Mint has released new gold and silver Proof-quality coins which incorporate new minting technology, resulting in greater depth and detail with incused strikes. After introducing double-incused Maple Leaf coins in 2018, they were followed by gold (2019) and black rhodium-plated (2020) versions. The art of Super Incuse strikes had been taken to all-new depths with the first Super Incuse Maple Leaf coins in 2021. While the previous incuse coins had a standard incuse depth of 0.3 millimetres, with new technology developed by the Royal Canadian Mint’s Research and Development team, the intricately engraved maple leaf sits 1.5 millimetres below the coin’s surface — which is nearly 40% of the coin’s gauge (or depth).
The now iconic Maple Leaf is the same one that appears on the new gold and silver Maple Leaf Super Incuse coins. In fact, the gold bullion coin range is where it made its debut in 1979. Former Chief Engraver Walter Ott (1920-2020) created the design for the first bullion coins and it has since become the signature design for all Royal Canadian Mint Maple Leaf bullion coins and special issues. Along with a modified Reverse Proof finish, the lightly frosted field, and brilliant relief, the Super Incused Maple Leaf gold and silver coins have been enhanced in 2022 with the addition of selective rose gold plating and a maple leaf background on both sides.
Depicted on the reverse is Former Chief Engraver Walter Ott’s iconic sugar maple leaf design, unchanged since the first gold Maple Leaf gold coins were issued in 1979 and the Silver Maple Leaf bullion coins were issued in 1988. The leaf that Ott chose for his design is based on the sugar maple, Acer saccharum. The famous Maple Leaf has been struck using Super Incuse technology, which gives it an incuse depth of 1.5 millimetres and is enhanced with rose gold plating. A modified Reverse Proof finish ensures the focus is front and centre on the brilliant relief. The reverse also includes the engraved words CANADA and FINE GOLD 2 OZ OR PUR or FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR, as well as the purity standard of 9999.
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, along with the engraved face value of 200 DOLLARS or 20 DOLLARS and the year 2022.
