In addition to realizing impressive prices in Internet sales during the month of September, CAC-approved coins fared well in a live auction in Dallas County (TX). Here are 10 examples that were selected from a large number of results that could have been listed.
- While CAC has been approving the grades of acceptable PCGS or NGC-certified coins since 2007, the new CAC grading service (CACG) is just getting started. On September 15, Heritage auctioned a 1921 Peace dollar that was graded as MS-66 and encapsulated by CACG. This MS-66 grade silver dollar realized $10,800. On July 21, Heritage auctioned an MS-66 1921 Peace dollar, without a CAC sticker, for $6610.80.
- On September 3, the firm called GreatCollections sold a CAC-approved MS-65 grade 1905 Lewis & Clark commemorative $1 gold piece for $8,653.70. On July 21, Heritage auctioned an MS-65 1905 Lewis & Clark commemorative $1 gold piece, without a CAC sticker, for $3,360.
- On September 6, Stack’s Bowers sold a CAC-approved MS-66 grade 1936-S Daniel Boone commemorative half dollar for $480. On March 29, Stack’s Bowers sold two MS-66 1936-S Boone commemorative half dollars, neither of which had a CAC sticker. One realized $264, and the other brought $240.
- On September 6, Stack’s Bowers sold a CAC-approved AU-58 grade 1914-D $2.5 gold coin for $840. On June 16, Stack’s Bowers sold an AU-58 1914-D $2.5 gold coin, without a CAC sticker, for $456.
- On September 14, Heritage auctioned a CAC-approved MS-64 grade 1886-O Morgan silver dollar for $15,600. On February 9, Heritage sold an MS-64 1886-O Morgan, without a CAC sticker, for $8,700. Market levels for these in September were not significantly different from levels in February 2023.
- On September 14, Heritage auctioned a CAC-approved AU-58 grade 1864 $20 gold coin for $24,000. On May 8, Heritage auctioned an AU-58 1864 $20 gold coin, without a CAC sticker, for $18,600.
- On September 14, Heritage auctioned a CAC-approved AU-58 1874-CC $20 gold coin for $15,000. On July 20, Heritage auctioned an AU-58 1874-CC $20 gold coin, without a CAC sticker, for $10,802.40.
- On September 17, GreatCollections sold a CAC-approved, MS-65 grade Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL) 1885-CC Morgan silver dollar for $5,562.70. On June 14, Stack’s Bowers auctioned an MS-65-DMPL 1885-CC Morgan dollar, without a CAC sticker, for $2,760, less than half as much.
- On September 24, GreatCollections sold a CAC-approved MS-65 grade 1927-D Peace silver dollar for $6,056.11. On May 5, Heritage auctioned an MS-65 grade 1927-D Peace dollar, without a CAC sticker, for $2,640, less than half as much.
- On September 24, GreatCollections sold a CAC-approved, MS-65 1907 “Wire Edge” high relief Saint Gaudens $20 gold coin for $71,505.50. On June 13, 2023, Stack’s Bowers sold an MS-65 1907 “Wire Edge” high relief Saint Gaudens $20 gold coin, without a CAC sticker, for $42,000.
