The treasury of the British Virgin Islands has announced (31st May) the issue of a special limited edition of their silver bullion coin, the Pegasus, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. To mark this important anniversary, the new Pegasus coins will be minted with an exceptional privy mark to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The new limited edition Pegasus includes a unique privy mark showing a paratrooper with the year 1944 incused into the canopy. To make the coins even more prestigious, they are being struck on Thursday 6th June 2019, to remember those who made so many sacrifices on that date 75 years ago.
The coins are produced by the Pobjoy Mint on behalf of the treasury of the British Virgin Islands. The reverse design of a winged Pegasus on his hind legs is accompanied with the privy mark showing a paratrooper falling down towards Pegasus to symbolise the paratroopers who risked their lives to take Pegasus Bridge during World War II. Originally named the “Benouville Bridge,” it was renamed “Pegasus Bridge” on 26th June 1944 in honour of being the first objective taken by the airborne troops in the Normandy campaign. As the badge of the regiment to which the paratroopers belonged featured the winged horse, Pegasus Bridge was an obvious choice.
The obverse side features an effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II, which is an exclusive design of the Pobjoy Mint. The year of issue, 2019, is included in the legend surrounding the Queen’s likeness, as is the coin’s issuer, BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS.
This particular day (and therefore the coin) has a special significance to the Pobjoy family, as Derek Pobjoy’s uncle, Dennis, was one of the paratroopers who landed in enemy territory at the very start of “the longest day,” which is why Pobjoy Mint was commissioned to produce this unique coin.
