The government and treasury of the British Indian Ocean Territory have issued (22nd March) new double crown silver Proof coins which feature a particular topic that has become popular with television and movie-going audiences: The dragon.
The popularity of dragons has increased dramatically over recent years, with appearances in books, songs, and movies such as Harry Potter, The Hobbit, Game of Thrones, and the popular children’s film How to Train Your Dragon. In terms of the classics, mythical images have been a core subject to appear on coins for many years. From the earliest times, each English monarch has used beasts to symbolise their descent and familial allegiances. Henry VIII had beasts carved to celebrate his marriage to Jane Seymour, which were placed in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace in South London, and included the Tudor dragon. There is also a dragon amongst the Queen’s Beasts. However, stories of these mythical creatures have been around for a very long time. Many are familiar with the story of St. George and the Dragon, and the Pistrucci depiction of the tale that has appeared on British coinage for the last two centuries has become a firm favourite with all levels of coin collectors.
The silver and cupro-nickel coins are produced by the Pobjoy Mint at their facilities in Surrey, England, on behalf of the treasury of the British Indian Ocean Territory. The silver Proof double crowns feature a female warrior astride her trained dragon, while the denomination of £4 is placed just above the dragon’s coiled tail. To accentuate the intricate image, the coin has been produced in high relief, which emphasises the depiction of the two characters, bringing to life the power of this unusual pairing.
The obverse of each coin includes an effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II, which is a portrait created for the exclusive use by the Pobjoy Mint. The year of issue, 2019, is included in the legend placed around the Queen’s likeness.
