The British Antarctic Territory has launched (30th November) their new 2020-dated £1 coins, which is also the first British Overseas territory to incorporate the specifications of the United Kingdom’s new bi-metallic pound coin in their circulation coinage. The new 12-sided £1 coin from the British Antarctic Territory includes all the security features of the new UK £1 coins which were introduced into circulation in 2017. The new bi-metallic coins are struck with an outer nickel-brass golden colour and inner nickel-plated brass silver colour core and incorporate 12 sides as part of their new design.
The coins are produced by the Pobjoy Mint, at their facilities in Surrey, England, on behalf of the treasury of the British Antarctic Territory. The reverse side’s design of these new £1 coins depicts a massive iceberg in the centre with the powerful message CLIMATE CHANGE – OUR GREATEST THREAT placed above the main design, a timely message we all need to take notice of to ensure that the Earth is preserved for many more generations to come. The denomination of ONE POUND is placed below the primary design. Also incorporating new security features of the £1 coins is the inclusion of micro-text around the whole of the perimeter or edge with the year 2020 repeated 12 times.
The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which is an exclusive design from the Pobjoy Mint. The text BRITISH ANTARCTIC TERRITORY and the year of issue, 2020, encircle the Queen’s likeness. Micro-text which reads ONE POUND can be read around the whole of the perimeter or edge and repeated 24 times. A holograph which includes the pound sign £ is placed directly under the Queen’s effigy.
