The third release is available from the Perth Mint’s Australian Opal series, which features nocturnal animals crafted in pure Australian Opal. Launched in 2012 with releases for the Koala and Wombat, the series will include eight different coins in total.
The reverse design of the coin features an inner panel design of a kangaroo detailed in pure Australian opal. The outer panel includes Sturts Desert Pea leaves and blossoms, with a depiction of the first crescent moon and the Southern Cross star grouping. Inscriptions include “Kangaroo” at the base and “2013 1 oz 999 silver” near the right edge of the coin.
The obverse contains the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the “1 Dollar” legal tender denomination below.
Each coin contains 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The diameter is 36.60 mm, and the thickness is 4.5 mm. The Perth Mint will release no more than 8,000 of these coins worldwide.
The 2013 Australian Opal Kangaroo 1 oz Silver Proof Coins are housed in a special display case with a light, which turns on when the case is opened. This is intended to represent the moon shining down on the animal. The packaging is completed with an outer shipper and numbered certificate of authenticity.
