The Royal Australian Mint has released the latest version of its annual “Kangaroo” series design, a popular collectible among coin enthusiasts. The series was first introduced in 1993, depicting one of the country’s most recognisable and iconic animals, the kangaroo. Horst Hahne designed the original coin, while the updated version features a unique depiction of the iconic marsupial, with new elements added. Over the last 30 years, a selection of different reverse designs have been released, adding appeal to this popular series. The 2023-dated updated anniversary version reflects the Royal Australian Mint’s commitment to preserving and featuring Australian history, culture, and the country’s unique wildlife. The “Kangaroo” series design contributes to that rich historical significance and is a testament to the popularity of both the coins and to one of Australia’s most beloved wildlife ambassadors.
The reverse side, which is shared on the gold and silver strikes, features a 30th-anniversary update of the original 1993 design by Horst Hahne. The coin features a red kangaroo in motion, hopping in an easterly direction. Just next to the kangaroo’s paws is the mintmark C for the Canberra Mint and, near the hind legs, are the conjoined initials HH representing the designer’s name. Above is the denomination 10 DOLLARS (gold) or 1 DOLLAR (silver), and below to the left are the specifications 1/10 OUNCE .9999 Au (gold) and 1 OUNCE .999 Ag (silver) with the commemorative inscription 30TH ANNIVERSARY placed closer to the coin’s rim.
The coin’s obverse features the Commonwealth Memorial Effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (1926–2022) designed by Jody Clark and includes the years 1952 – 2022 as part of the legend surrounding the Queen’s likeness.
