The Treasury of Ascension Island have launched (14th May) a new coin which celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who marked 60 years on the British throne on 6th February of this year. This new coin incorporates a world first in the production of a collector coin.
Struck by the Pobjoy Mint in the United Kingdom, this stunning new coin features a side portrait of the Queen wearing St. Edward’s Crown which has been produced with the highest relief that has ever been produced on a coin. The engraving process of high relief for a design which appears on a metal surface is usually reserved the production or striking of a medallion rather than that of a circulation or collector coin. The technique, which requires a greater degree of striking pressure also results in a design which appears much sharper and more detailed with the appearance of a portrait looking more life-like and animated.
The obverse of each coin features a unique double effigy of Her Majesty, the first is a portrait of The Queen as she appears on current coins while the other is a portrait of Her Majesty as she appeared on coins at the beginning of her Reign.
Available in proof quality Piedfort Silver (.999 fine 2 ounce total weight) with a relief of 4mm, and in Proof Piedfort Gold (.999 fine 1 ounce total weight) with a relief of 3mm, each beautifully engineered coin has been struck to the highest quality and is a fitting tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in her Diamond Jubilee Year. The silver piedfort coin has a diameter of 38.6 mm. with a total mintage of 2,012 pieces. The gold piedfort coin has a diameter of 30 mm. and a total issue of 1,952 pieces.
