The United States Mint’s gold and silver bullion coin sales continue to show strength amidst the weakness in precious metals market prices. With half the year completed, sales of the American Silver Eagles are on pace for a record year, and sales of American Gold Eagles are nearly double the total for the comparable year ago period.
During June 2013, Silver Eagle sales reached 3,275,000 ounces. While this amount was down somewhat from the prior month when 3,458,500 ounces were sold, however it was up by 14.6% compared to the year ago period when sales reached 2,858,000 ounces.
As mentioned in the past, the current monthly sales totals for Silver Eagles are not a reflection of overall demand for the coins. The US Mint continues to conduct sales under their allocation program, which rations the available supplies amongst authorized purchasers. In January, record monthly sales had exhausted the Mint’s entire inventory of coins, necessitating an eleven day suspension. Following the suspension, sales were resumed on a rationed basis and have remained as such through the current date.
Year to date sales for the popular silver bullion coins have now reached 25,043,500. This amount is up by 44.0% from the mid year total for last year. More significantly, the year to date sales are up by 12.3% compared to the mid year sales total for 2011, when annual sales had achieved the current record high of 39,868,500.
