The United States Mint’s American Gold and Silver Eagle bullion coins achieved another month of strong sales. Monthly sales levels for each of the popular programs were more than double compared to the year ago period. The monthly total for Gold Eagles was the highest since July 2010.
For each month from January to September 2012, Gold and Silver Eagle bullion coins had recorded lower monthly sales compared to the year ago period. The losing streak was finally broken in October, which has now been followed by an even stronger month in November.
For November 2012, sales of the American Gold Eagle bullion coins accounted for 136,500 troy ounces, with the majority of sales occurring for the one ounce size. This is up by 233% compared to the total sales of 41,000 ounces in November 2011. The latest monthly total is also up a substantial 131% from the prior month when 59,000 ounces were sold.
Despite the recent strength, annual sales are still lagging. Year to date sales for Gold Eagles have reached 677,000, which compares to prior year total sales of 1,000,000 ounces.
