The United States Mint recorded lower monthly sales for their American Gold and Silver Eagle bullion coins when compared to the prior year period. The lower sales for the popular Silver Eagles do not seem to be an indication of lower demand, but rather year-end production planning by the US Mint.
For the month of November 2013, Gold Eagle bullion sales reached 48,000 troy ounces across all options. The most popular seller by both unit volume and total weight was the 1 oz sized coins at 44,000 pieces. The remaining sales were divided between 2,000 of the 1/2 oz coins, 4,000 of the 1/4 oz coins, and 20,000 of the 1/10 oz coins.
Compared to the year ago period of November 2012, sales are down by a significant 64.8%. That month sales had experienced an uncharacteristic surge, bringing them to the highest monthly total in several years.

Sales of the one troy ounce Silver Eagle bullion coins reached 2,300,000 pieces during November 2013. The US Mint recently provided details on the year end availability of the 2013 Silver Eagles and the release date for the 2014 Silver Eagles. The final allocation for this year’s coins will occur on December 9, and orders will be accepted for next year’s coins on January 13, 2014. Since the announcement, the Mint has reduced the weekly Silver Eagle bullion coin allocations available to authorized purchasers, most likely because they are using available blanks for the production of 2014-dated coins.
For the year to date, Silver Eagle sales have now reached 41,475,000. This already exceeds the prior annual sales record of 40,175,000 ounces achieved in 2011.
During the month, the US Mint also offered the one ounce 24 karat American Gold Buffalo bullion coins, which recorded sales of 14,000 pieces. The America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins had relatively robust sales of 39,100 pieces for the month. A total of 35,000 pieces was attributable to the release of the final design for the year featuring Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
